ALSA unresolved symbols

I know that there are a lot of ALSA questions posted here, but I couldn't find the solution to this problem. Hopefully, I'm just an idiot and this is an easy question.

Background:
Installed Slack 9, KDE's arts server got sound working pronto. To use wine with sound, you generally should use ALSA. So, obviously, I head to ALSA's site, download the 0.9.3 drive/lib/utils and install them. I configure with:
./configure --with-cards=emu10k1 --with-sequencer=yes --with-kernel=/usr <-- (becuase is automatically tacks on (specified path)/linux/include/whatever.h)

Everything goes hunky dory, I configure/make/make install everything (driver/lib/utils) and do the modprobe on all of the modules. Everything's cool. So I pop in the ALSA aliases in the modules.conf file and reboot for sound. <--everything's standard up to here-->

The Problem:
Upon reboot, the system complains that insmod can't get emu10k1 module installed. So I check to see what error it gives and it says:

Using /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz: unresolved symbol ac97_probe_codec
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz: unresolved symbol ac97_read_proc

And I have no clue of what to do with this...

Related Sys. Specs:
Soundcard : SoundBlaster 512 PCI (emu10k1, supported by ALSA)

If I am not mistaken all alsa modules begin with "snd-". The messages you posted were from the kernel modules trying to load without the ac97 support loaded. Maybe they were replaced by the alsa install. So I think I would recommend adding the emu10k1 module to the end of /etc/hotplug/blacklist file to prevent the hotplug system from attempting to load it.

You will then have to determine if the desired alsa modules are loaded or load them manually.
