ALSA-Problem with kernel 2.6.11.12

I installed kernel 2.6.11.12 on my Slackware 10.1. Now I have problems to install my sound blaster live.
When I run alsaconf the correct soundcard is detected. Also the modules are loaded:
Module Size Used by
snd_pcm_oss 48096 0
snd_mixer_oss 17600 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_emu10k1 95684 0
snd_rawmidi 20192 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_seq_device 6988 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
snd_ac97_codec 72064 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_pcm 80328 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 21380 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 7620 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd_util_mem 3328 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_hwdep 7328 1 snd_emu10k1
snd 44068 9

Alsamixer gives the following message: 'alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory'.

Thanks for your help

Is /etc/rc.d/rc.udev executable ?
Could you post the output with ls -l /dev/sound ?

Have you tried reinstalling the three alsa packages from slackware current. After which I ran alsaconf, aslamixer & alsactl store. It fixed my problem after installing kernel 2.6.12.2 on my daughters computer.

This 1 i you should be able to fix with the new alsa packages. if you go to alsa-project.org you will see that they use a 1.9 version now instead of the 1.8 and they have all new libraries, ect.. I would try to redo it with the brand new set. What i have found just in general is that alsa still has a way to go and the new updates are definately superior compared to older packages. Slack always goes for stable based on their maintainers view of "stable". so their alsa package might be 1.6 or 1.8 at best.
