Alsa: no mixer elems found

I read that to get sound running I needed to run alsaconf, which I did. It detected my hardware and said everything was dandy. I didn't get any sound right from that so I tried running alsamixer to turn up the volume and it said "no mixer elems found". I searched for this error and found a post on this forum about adding "snd-intel8x0m" to /etc/hotplug/blacklist. I did this, reran alsaconf but still nothing. What else do I need to do? (Yes my sound hardware is the intel8x0, according to alsaconf.)

Did you restart hotplugging after adding your sound chip to the blacklist? Open a terminal and, as root, run:

/etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug restart

If that don't work, you may need to restart.
