Wow!!
I've been running Mandrake and Redhat for a couple of years now and I just installed Slackware 9.1 and I am impressed!!! It's so much faster than Mandrake was. (slimmer kernel right?) Also seems more configurable and more powerful.
I only have one minor annoyance. I have a Lexmark Z11 printer and can't get it to print. Well, I take that back. Can't get it to print anything but garbage. I went to linuxprinting.org and generated a ppd file and used that. It just printed a bunch of black lines. Then I downloaded the lz11 package and installed it. Then the printer ran the paper through like it was printing, but didn't actually print anything. (yep. plenty of ink.)
Oh, I take that back. It did print lines just like before only much, much lighter.
Like I said, only a minow annoyance, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Check out http://www.pvv.org/~jorgensa/slackware for a couple packages that make using CUPS really easy. They're from Ximian so they're for GNOME, but as long as you have the GNOME libraries installed you should be able to use the programs under KDE as well. CUPS is a pretty good printing system. To use it under Slackware you just have to make /etc/rc.d/rc.cups executable to start the cups daemon. I'm not sure if you're printer is supported but it's worth a shot. Good luck!
Well, I tried configuring it through the printing manager...Also through the browser. No luck either way. It either does nothing, or it acts like it's printing but only prints lines. I guess I'll keep tinkering with it and see what happens. It's not enough of a bother to make me go back to Mandrake.
Thanks Tink.
I've got the latest foomatic.
Now I need to so I can make a little more sense of the code you gave me. lol. It pretty well makes sense, I just want to be sure I know what I'm trying to do.
