Afterstep is Awesome

Today I installed Afterstep 2.2 on my workplace box. It totally rocks. The compile went totally smoothly (I downloaded the source from afterstep.org) and it's working wonderfully. The menus are fuller than anything in Enlightenment -- I have applications that I didn't know I had.

Of course, I had to learn how to use "killall" after I activated xsnow and found no way to turn it off.

If you want to try an alternative window manager, give it a try.

It is amazing of the window maker choices out there. I tried Afterstep but that was 6 -7 years ago I think. Was nice and simply then.

Check out the pkill command as a choice as well.

My busy evening has been using FUSE with ntfs-3g and sshfs through it. That is just a start, there are several userspace filesystem choices on FUSE.

Glad you found a window manager that you like. There's quite a bunch
to pick from, that's for sure. Whatever servers your hardware or personal taste.

I remember, more than 10 years ago, when I was still an uneducated Windows-slave, my first and only impressions of Linux came from computer magazines I read. And the screenshots showed some kind of GUI that looked pretty nice with all that gradients and big high-colour icons and I thought like "Gaah, colours! Me wantee!". And yes, that was the Afterstep wm.
When I tried Linux some time later, however, I settled with fvwm2.

Nowadays, with all that RAM and cpu cycles to spare, I use a heavily customized KDE3.5 and am very satisfied with its functionality.

cheers

PS: I always thought it is a good idea to bind the command xkill to a keyboard shortcut

I prefer fluxbox ... just cuz it's very light, very customizable, and very functional. Only possible downside is not a lot of auto-detection of programs, but I don't really care, I just write the menu myself, I only have to do it once.
