WOW!

I installed Slack 9.1 today and it's wonderful. Fast, fast, fast!
I've learned so much in this forum over the last year, it's gotten me a lot farther into this setup than I could do last year with 8.1.

Sound is a piece of cake compared to Mandrake! It didn't detect my cd-rom drive (hdd), or my zip, and I can't figure out how to start Cups, but I will. It's definitely challenging me to my limits.

Get ready for a slew of questions, if I can't find the answers in Search.

Peace,
Siri Amrit

I went back to 8.1. On my computer system, it just runs faster; and I really dont need any of the additional "features" that slack9.1 offers. Pretty much the only reason to upgrade for me was to run the "latest and greatest", which isn't a really good reason to upgrade what works well anyways.

Maybe ill try an updated version of slackware again f I ever upgrade my comp to something more modern.

I did a S9.1 installation last night. It was a great, fast and efficient. I love the new menu install method in S9.1. As oppose to 9.0 and 8.1 it doesn't start installing after you select the packages of every group. Which is great if you want to do a leave it alone installation.

Nvidia installation was such so easy. Just run the nvidia*.run and say no to downloads and it will kick up a driver for you and copied to necessary places automatically. (works in 9.0 but u need to install the kernel sources from /current)

The sound is beautiful. Great to have the alsa working (as opposed to 9.1)

Another great new feature during installation which I love is that it allows you to choose which rc script to run or not to run during boot up. I know you can do this by editing rc.M but, it is great feature to be able to do that right from the installation.

I would give it a 10/10.
Best Slackware so far since 7.0 (That is when I started using Slackware)

As far as fonts are concerned: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...5&pagenumber=2

Maybe this will help you somehow... Also make sure that you have installed some high-quality TTF fonts in addition (say, Microsoft web package for example) otherwise the result will look awful regardless of all modifications made.

The fonts are quite nice in 9.1. And the seeking problem with the harddrive is resolved, too. Overall, Slack 9.1 is a treat. There's just something about the way Slackware "feels" that no other distro has...
I still need to figure out some things, like starting Cups at boot, why iptables doesn't seem to be running, adding my burner to fstab, but all will come in time :-)
