I, too, have the annoying ATI drivers hardlock crash whenever I exit (or if in init 4, logout) X. I use fluxbox and, I believe, kdm to log in with when in init 4. The only way I currently have to quit X is to run init level 3, switch to the console and Ctrl+C on the X server. This isn't a lot of fun for me at all, though.
I have looked through the bug list and put the TerminateServer=true in my kdmrc file, but to no avail. As soon as I click Exit from the fluxbox menu my system completely locks up. I can ssh into the computer from my laptop and shut it down from there (as opposed to a hard reboot), but that is all really. I believe this only started AFTER I enabled dri, too.
Any ideas? I can post xorg.conf etc if required, but it is all pretty much default aticonf --initial=dual-head right now.
EDIT: I changed from dual server to big desktop (one X server over two screens) and this has fixed the problem. However, I do want to use two X sessions, so again, if anyone has any ideas...
it's really a rush to the head when you can figure something out for yourself. especially when its something like hardware graphics acceleration. if your doing 3000 fps on 1400x1250 your doing real good
cheers

Aw well, yeah it does fine for a few minutes, then it'll crash. I just switched back to the X11 ati drivers. Not the fgrlx
I uninstalled the previous drivers according to this thread. Instead after searching the web, I found out that the pre-compiled kernel comes with generic ati drivers. And I can load the radeon driver as a module via /sbin/modprobe radeon
Now everything works great, at least so far, running max resolution of 1400X1250 and under glxgears I get
This is my xorg.conf
Will tweak it more later

if I'm using i.e :
mplayer -fs *.avi it will only be on a part of the screen (if I use --overlay-type=X11 and -zoom on mplayer it will be full screen) but I don't want to use -zoom function.
any suggestion?
That's mplayer output using Xv as overlay type

This doesn't help much, but since they rewrote the OpenGL code the support for XV in fglrx has stunk (apparently for some reason they moved the XV code into the OpenGL code). Video on a second monitor (or with a second monitor plugged in) is also hit or miss. Phoronix is probably the best place to find a solution or work around. Allegedly AMD have even started occasionally looking at the forums there. (Like a certain other graphics company, perhaps?)
I was tired of my old Nvidia MX440 video card (I dual-boot Windows for gaming, so I needed an update BAD). I bought a used GForce 6200 at a local store, and put it in my box. Downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia.com, ran it, and viola!
It WORKS.
Now to be able to play with Coolbits will be nice....
Do you happen to know how to do it on dual screen as-well?
It's just doesn't work for me now, and when I play movies I use -vo x11 or -vo xv + -zoom to render the movie to work on full screen (which makes lags).
I'd be more then happy if you help me on this one.
What modules are loaded? (lsmod)
I will post it once i get home from work
Did you use 'xorgsetup' to setup xwindows? Or another method? (xorgsetup usually works great for an Intel chip)
I went for Xorg -configure.
I will try to use xorgsetup...
Hello everyone!
I hope for your help - first, direct rendering DON'T work I need it - I code whith the opengl;
my computer: FSC amilo pi 2515, graphical card is X3100 on chipset i965gm; Slackware 12, kernel - 2.6.21.5 my edition; so
This is my configs and logs:
