Back in the day, I used to use mutt with a pop email service. When I heard of gmail, I was able to get an invite during the early days. But it was just a web mail service back then, so I had to make an adjustment. I like gmail for the space and unobtrusive ads. They have since added pop service, which I have not used much with mutt. Now they have added imap, and having never really used imap, I have been thinking about it. I really want to get off of using gmail on the web. With the new version, it has gotten really slow even on broadband, and it has annoying contact card popups if you accidentally hover your cursor over a persons name. So I was wondering, what email client do people use with gmail? I know that mutt can do imap, and curious if that is worth trying too. I'm looking for using anything slackware can provide.
I use mozilla thunderbird, 20$ says slackware has it... and if you're new to it, there's a step by step tutorial on how to set it up on gmail's help site.
You mean you have both to configured to use gmail? It sounds like that would work well with IMAP because it will stay in sync easy. How does the folders (labels in gmail) work in mutt? I suspect thunderbird works pretty intuitively already.
I always feel a little guilty pushing my work but I have put a lot of work into a page that goes into great detail about using mutt with gmail. It covers either pop over ssl or imap:
For the pop over ssl section Slackware has the ssl certs in the curl package although I extracted these manually and documented this.
You will need to modify the stock Slackware 12 mutt for imap, and I stumbled though this until I finally gave up and compiled 1.5.7 with the following compile options:
