a few questions on upgrading

I've read the "upgrade.txt" and "changes and hints" but still have a few questions.

I'm running a quad boot system: Slackware 12.2 (32bit), Slackware64 (current), and two Windows OS's. I'd like to upgrade both Slackware versions.

In Slackware64-13.0 Changes and Hints:

Quote:
*** INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPGRADING FROM 12.2 ***

Follow the instructions detailed in the UPGRADE.TXT located in this
directory. Note that upgrading from a Slackware version earlier
than 12.2 is NOT supported at all and will most likely not work.

Also note that upgrading from 12.2 to 13.0 (64bit) is not supported.
My question is: Can I upgrade the Slackware64-current to Slackware64-13.0?

My Slackware version from /etc/slackware-version reports:

Code:
Slackware 13.0.0.0.0
It seems there are two different version 13.0's availble...here's a screen shot of one of the official repositories:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...1&d=1253899365

I am using the Slackware64-current. Are there any changes from *64-current to *64-13.0?

My second issue is just being a bit afraid of upgrading. Installation was fun and relatively easy. Even though I've searched and read on upgrading, I would like some "hand-holding" through the process. My plan was to download the necessary directory's (a-y*) and proceed from there. I want the process to be as painless as possible. I don't know if using slapt-get, slackpkg, pkgtool, or other would be the best way to accomplish the task. I'll have a printed copy of Upgrade.txt at my side, and hopefully a few useful comments from members who reply here

The most recent stable release of Slackware is 13.0 - this is available for 32bit (i486) and 64bit (x86_64) architectures.

Then there is the "-current" tree as well. Slackware-current will start afresh after the release of an official Slackware stable version.

At this moment in time, slackware64-current deviates only a little from the stable slackware64-13.0, but as time goes by, there will be functional and intrusive changes in the package collection for -current, whereas 13.0 will only receive updates in the form of patches that address software vulnerabilities.

To address your question - yes it will be easy to upgrade from your (outdated) version of "slackware64-current" to the stable slackware64-13.0. The easiest way to do this is use slackpkg. First, upgrade slackpkg to the version which is contained in slackware64-current. Then, point slackpkg's "mirrors" file to one of the 13.0 mirrors and let it bring your computer up to date.

All came out well. I used the upgrade.txt as a guide. I haven't found anything that is broken accept KDE's network configuration util, but it was broken before (not that I used it ). As far as I can tell, ONLY the things that NEEDED upgrading got upgraded. I monitored the text as it flew by and saw many files that were skipped (already current). A log of 49 (20 + 29) removed packages and scripts was created during the process. I didn't see a "changes and hints" file for the specifics on upgrading from *64-current to *64-13.0 so I don't have a reference to compare to. So far, all my configs remain unchanged. Thanks for the vote of confidence Alien Bob!
