ive read the stickies on the kernel re-compiling but i have other questions.
i had that blank screen problem and it looks like i missed an option i was supposed to compile in. the sound is also gone after the compile of 2.6.5 kernel.
my questions are:
do i need to re-compile it again with those options so i dont get a blank screen?
with the sound issue, would it be easier just to install alsa-driver/libs/utils again? im new to modprobing and setting all of it up so i wouldnt know where to start with that. my modules.conf and modprobe.conf are empty for some reason.
if i do need to recompile, i have both 2.6.5 and 2.4.22 in lilo. the 2.6.5 is just labeled vmlinuz and the 2.4.22 is labeled vmlinuz.old. would the recompile of the 2.6.5 kernel overwrite the 2.6.5 thats already there(vmlinuz)?
I don't think you need to recompile the kernel because of the blank screen problem. When you boot up use textmode for the console (instead of vga=791 or whatever you use)
I disagree about reinstalling the ALSA drivers. In my opinion the kernel drivers improved a lot in the 2.6.5 kernel and are good enough for me. I used to compile the user space ones from the ALSA website because the quality was better than the kernel drivers but I just can't hear a difference anymore and it's much easier to include them in the kernel as they don't need to be reinstalled when I try tweaking the kernel. Of course, the situation may be different with your hardware and you may have more discerning ears so use your own judgement, but give the kernel drivers a shot. Try it, you might like it.
