13.1: mixer device not found after upgrade from 13.0

Hi guys,

have recently upgraded Slackware/Salix 13.0 to 13.1 and it all went smooth except for one problem with the mixer which apparently cannot be found. Only OSS card is seen in Xfce mixer, and OSS works, but no alsa card.

I have a Via82xx onboard chip and a SB Audigy 1 [SB0092], Emu10K1. Via was set up with an alias as the first to load. All this worked perfectly in 13.0. Now aplay gives the following message:

Quote:
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768: (parse_card) cannot find card 'Audigy'
ALSA lib conf.c:4154: (_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c: 392: (snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:4154: (_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c: 1251: (snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c: 4154: (_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c: 4633: (snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c: 2211: (snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
aplay: main:654: audio open error: No such device
I'm stumped. Had a look at the file system and all seems to look like it should. alsa.conf and asound.state are there. I had even removed asound. state in case it was locked like suggested in Changes and Hints, but that was not it. It did not get regenerated because cards are not seen.

If anybody can make sense of this, thanks a lot.

Unhappy

Looks like a b0rked upgrade. Is it normal that there's nothing in /dev/snd/ except the /by-path directory ? My virtual installation says there should be something in there. Mystery almost solved. But how happen?

Well, that was interesting. It wasn't a problem with alsa but related to udev. If you upgrade to 13.1 but elect to keep your old stock kernel from 13.0 around like I did DO NOT upgrade udev, otherwise your system will not recognise your alsa devices. Going back to udev-141 from 13.0 solved the issue.
