Question [Slackware 15.1-current] X Window System doesn't start

After I upgraded from Linux kernel 5.17.8 to 5.17.9 and today rebooted, X Window System doesn't start. KDE and XFCE colour part of the screen top white, and the rest black, and one one or both I saw a mouse cursor, then nothingn happens. Twm just shows black screen.

Your log tells you are still running 5.17.8. Try to remember what you always need to do after kernel upgrade.

I know. I installed new kernel, setup old kernels, updated bootloader, rebooted into 5.17.9, compiled zfs-on-linux & started zfs, logged in non-root, tried to start X Window System (X.) Didn't work so I rebooted; selected 5.17.8: now same happens on that.

I had to 'slackpkg clean-system' and now get clearer error message (log updated: ) X says it can't run in framebuffer mode.

Have you try using kernel-generic + kernel-modules?

Sounds like the kernel is not causing your issue if the same issue now also occurs with your original kernel
Rather I suspect some left-over software or some configuration that prevents the X from initializing.

Thumbs up

WHen I removed kernel option 'amdgpu.dc=0' X worked again, but the strange thing is, some weeks/months ago someone told me to add that option for similar/same problem.

I assume 'amdgpu.dc=0' may have been a temporary fix for a kernel issue and with newer kernels that fix not only got obsoleted but in fact now has an adversary effect.
