[ANN] French book about Linux based on Slackware 14.2

Hello everybody,

The french editor Eyrolles has just published "Débuter avec Linux", a 522-page book about Linux based entirely on Slackware 14.2, mainly aimed at the curious beginner who's not afraid to get things done on the command line.

http://www.editions-eyrolles.com/Liv...ter-avec-linux

This book has been in the works for no less than three years, with as many rewritings from scratch based successively on CentOS, Ubuntu, ElementaryOS and (finally) Slackware. It's a complete rewrite of "Linux aux petits oignons", based on CentOS 5.3 and published back in 2009. The book has survived several changes in editorial staff and corresponding publishing policies, and I'm happy to say that my new editor is a nice guy with a very "geeky" (understand: Slackware-friendly) profile. More than that, he offered to publish the book in the prestigious "Collection Blanche". One giant step for me, one small step for mankind.

Did I mention that the book is written in French? Hey, nobody's perfect.

Cheers from the sunny South of France,

Niki

Congratulations on the happy conclusion of your endeavor. May you get a lot of sales; Slackware needs a lot of exposure to teach new users of Linux that we dont need a lot of complication to do our work.

Merci, Didier! (I'll continue in english, or we'll both get flamed.) You'll find your name mentioned in two places in the book. There's a short presentation of your Slint project. And on another place, your nice little hack about displaying man pages with the wrong encoding.

More generally, third-party projects by AlienBob, Willy, Chess Griffin, Matteo Rossini etc. have their place in the book, though in the end I had to cut more than 80 pages, which felt like hacking off an arm and a leg.

Here's a little more information about the book (in French).

Cheers,

Niki

Self-publishing, nah. I just contacted No Starch Press (the equivalent of Eyrolles in the United States) on a whim. Let's see if this works out.

Well done!

Not that really need to learn how to use Linux or Slackware, but I will probably try to get my own copy soon. I just need to find a way to get it on this side of the ocean...

LibreOffice. My editor has a very detailed style sheet for all his technical books. Once it's written, it gets through the hands of a proofreading team. LibreOffice has some nice reviewing and annotation functions for that. The final version of the manuscript then gets sent to production, and I think they use something like XPress.
