I noticed that latest ALSA does not like "/etc/alsa.conf" and thinks that its syntax is wrong, and even "alsactl" refused to work until I removed it.
After that, everything worked perfectly, including PulseAudio with its defaults settings.
Then, out of enthusiasm I renamed "/etc/alsa/conf.d/99-pulseaudio-default.conf.example" as "/etc/alsa/conf.d/99-pulseaudio-default.conf" and I have a wonderful audio.
