Question Debian 9 MATE Desktop loading with no window manager.

Hi.

On Debian 9.4, my MATE Desktop (1.16) is loading without a window manager. If I select 'Marco (No compositor)' in MATE Tweak, it works fine but looks bad when dragging icons on the desktop view.

I prefer 'Marco (Compton GPU compositor)' or 'Marco (Software compositor)' but these are unusable at the moment.

In MATE Tweak, just after log in (also there's no window borders with min max close buttons) there's red text that reads: "You are currently using an unknown and unsupported window manager. Thus we cannot guarantee that changes made here will be effective."

Also, the cursor is a black x until I chose 'Marco (No compositor)'. If I then go and choose either 'Marco (Compton GPU compositor)' or 'Marco (Software compositor)' again in MATE Tweak - all is fine until my next reboot\re-login.

I reinstalled marco in Synaptic but no joy.

I also tried:
Code:
sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager
Is there a fix?

Thanks.

Post

I tried the info from this post: https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/marc...reboot/9420/20

I deleted these files:
  • metacity-no-composite.desktop
  • metacity-compton.desktop
  • marco-xcompmgr.desktop
  • marco-compton.desktop
  • marco.desktop

The problem seems to be gone after a re-login.

A further note - when I was on 'no compositor', it looked like this (image linked) when dragging icons. There's a big white square around the item when dragging - I wonder if that's the same for everyone.

fwiw, you forgot to mention that you're using the backported version of mate?

Hi ondoho. I mentioned backport a few times in that thread. Yesterday, in sorting this old issue (I reinstalled Debian 9 + MATE backports) - I accidentally fixed the issue with the QT system tray apps.
