ubi-partman crashed + initramfs-tools error/problem on Lubuntu 17.04 install from USB (Asus EeePC 1005PE)

Hello,

I'm trying to install Lubuntu on my EeePC 1005PE, 1.66Ghz Atom proessor, 2GB RAM.

I've got several partitions: Windows 7, Linux 10.04 (which for the time being I want to conserve). I have prepared a 80GB partition ext4 for Lubuntu, I also have a 40GB FAT32 partition for data (empty for the time being) and also a large (12GB, I think) SWAP partition.

I finally managed to get the USB pendrive to work. I can get the live version of Lubuntu working.

When installing from it, I get error messages:
Quote:
ubi-partman failed with exit code 10. Further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to...
Quote:
Problem in initramfs-tools... E:Write error (28: No space left on device), E:IO Error saving source cache, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened
I've sometimes got this error but not this time round): a prompt with
Quote:
(initramfs)
after which I can do nothing.

I don't know how to consult "/var/log/syslog" in the context of a live USB pendrive.

I have googled it, and have found info, but am unable to interpret it, that is, info is given, but not exact instructions (commands, step-by-step), and I can't solve the problem.

One site said that the installer was attempting to install on a Windows partition and that I am supposed to put a "nodmraid" parameter when installing, but, after several attemps, I realized that I simply do not know how to do this (the "install" command does not work on boot prompt).

Looking forward to your replies!

Thanks in advance,

RM

after my last command. you will get tons of readouts. This part

seems a key statement to me though. 12 gig of swap is not needed in my opinion. 4 gig would have been enough. I'd start over if I was in your shoes. Did you md5sum Lubuntu iso also before trying a install?

Thanks for your reply rokytnji,

So your telling me to run this command?:
Code:
$ cd /var/log
$ ls -l
I don't know where to run it? I can't seem to be able to run commands even when I get a prompt during installation. I'll try, but I'm not sure I can swing it. I had written about this in my initial message:
Quote:
I don't know how to consult "/var/log/syslog" in the context of a live USB pendrive.
Actually, once I begin installation, I am no longer IN the live Lubuntu distro.

I'm not convinced, but fair enough, I'll try to download Lubuntu again, do the checksums, install on other USB device. You never know. It's worth a shot. I'll keep you posted.

The SWAP was formatted years ago for Ubuntu 10.04, which I'm running along side Windows 7. Lubuntu 17.04 is going to be on yet another partition.

I was also wondering if there was something in the BIOS that I could modify to solve the problem.

Is there an alternative method for installation? Other than launching the live distro and installing from there? If so, what is the procedure?

So, I'm going to dig deeper and start from scratch (probably tomorrow), but, in the meantime, if anybody else has any other suggestions, please let me know.

Many thanks again, rokytnji.

What ever terminal you are running is just fine. If you are to drop out of desktop. try it at/after the " $ " prompt shown on the
black screen full of unintelligible readouts when they are done loading and you are just left with $ or # with them waiting for input from you.

The problem was during the process of putting the iso onto the usb device. Somehow, the default software on my old Ubuntu 10.04 OS (disk creator or something like that) was doing something wrong. I then used other software and all was okay. Problem solved.
