[SOLVED] How to add more virtual disk space in RHEL?

My host OS is Ubuntu and on top of that I'm running RHEL7.5 workstation on virtualbox.


I originally created the disk space to be 47GB, but needed more.

So, I did :


Then I added the gpart iso to boot to help with partitioning:

But the space doesn't come up..



It looks like the extra space was added in /dev/sda2, but I can't even mount it. Whenever I do "sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt" I get an mount: unknown filesystem type "l2vm_member".

I want the extra 25GB in /dev/sda2 added into the /dev/mapper/rhel-root directory - can someone explain to me like a 5 year old how I can do this?

This means that sda2 is a physical volume. You can’t mount it, but if it is in a volume group, you can either extend the sizes of existing logical volumes or create new ones. For details, I suggest you find an LVM tutorial like https://www.digitalocean.com/communi...and-operations.

How did you increase the disk space?

On the RHEL VM, run the commands lsblk, pvs, vgs and lvs and post the result. They list all block devices, physical volumes, volume groups and logical volumes.

Remember, there are two parts to increasing disk space.

The first part is to tell the hypervisor to give more disk space to your VM.

The second part is to tell the VM that the hypervisor has given it more space.

You've probably got several file systems, well, which one gets all or some of the space?
You've got to create a new file system for your new disk; and/or modify existing file systems that it is no longer this big but that big, etc. etc.

The link someone gave in this thread addresses the how -- I'm pointing out it's reasonable.
In Linux it's reasonably easy; I've done it several times. Thank God for LVM!
Having done on a Macintosh, it's simple, just moving a slider bar <.yikes>, you don't even have to reboot.
On Windows, it's a bizaare PowerShell almost Twilight-Zone visitation.
