Style layout change for the webforum here?

Heya folks,

What if the site layout here on the webforum would get an overhaul and
update?

I don't mean to change it so that people don't recognize it
anymore; nor do I propose changing to discord or whatever the
name was either. But some of the webforum feels a bit outdated
now. Maybe I am getting old but I don't quite remember the webforum
looking different in the past ... (but, just to clarify again: I
don't propose a complete overhaul, just some stylistic updates.
E. g. keep the blue-ish colour tone and such.)

If the issue is of too much work for one person then perhaps the
work load could be distributed among different folks?

What, so we can all have a "Facebook" moment (er, hours ...) when some-one implements a harmless change ?.

Doesn't matter to me - roll with it, changes and all if they happen ... :shrug:

It was announced that an update with new typography was in the works.

Anyway, did you have specific suggestions in mind?

I think that an overhaul is already in the works and is proceeding slowly and deliberately.

Personally, I find the current design meets my needs just fine, but the search feature can be a bit pokey at times, but there's lots of data to be searched through.

It was announced when I started using LQ, possibly even before that.

But looking at the source of any forum page I can see it isn't so easy to change anything - almost no CSS, a lot of inline styling. Have to rewrite everything.

It's fine as it is, thankyou, it works reliably, & that's all that is needed.

The only feature I feel like missing on this forum is easy way to put images/screenshots in a post (with text above and below). Attached images, as it is now, seem to appear as thumbnails at the bottom of the post.

Some subforums disallow inline images completely, be they loaded from an attachment or from a link.
For those that allow it (like this one), you can:

Personally, I find the font sizes way to small for comfort on a 100% zoom level.

Also, there's a lot of wasted horizontal space with the current layout. I lose about 1/5th oy my screen to the side panels on the right, and a similar amount to the panel on the left of each post where the poster's stats are. I'd like to see the poster's name moved onto the heading line on each post, and the space used by that stats panel be given to the posts actual content.

I'm really happy with the high contrast colour scheme, which makes for clear text and an easy read. Too many sites these days use dark grey text of a light grey background, which is just awful, so whatever you do, don't change the colours!

A great thing about HTML/CSS is that it's hackable - if you don't like the current font/colours/layout, it's not that complicated to apply your own stylesheets and/or re-order the markup to taste. (Well, not that complicated on sites like LQ; ones that overuse/misuse JavaScript can be awkward, but they're best avoided anyway.)

See Greasemonkey, Stylus, etc.

^ I'm not sure to what extent that would work on LQ, since most styles are inline, many of which in pre-CSS syntax.
Also I don't know if it could make LQ responsive a.k.a mobile friendly (which is basically what GazL asks).

I remember once, years ago, trying some Stylish preset for LQ and it was rather disappointing.
I'm sure something could be hacked, but it would be a lot of work. I dare you to look at the source for any LQ page.

About font sizes, Firefox allows to zoom it in, and remembers site-wide zoom settings.

I've seen the source, and it might be spaghetti, but... well, let me put it this way - a single CSS rule with just two properties can do this... [see attached]

Not perfect, and there are other issues to solve, but they can all be solved.

(And to be clear I don't mean to suggest cleaning up the source isn't a good idea, it is, but it's also not the blocker it might appear to be.)

which one?

A simple "td { display:block; width:auto; }"

Some cells then need to be reset back to display:table-cell (e.g. quick reply toolbar), whilst others might benefit from being inline-block plus specific widths/padding (e.g. similar threads), etc.
