Running Xubuntu on an Acer-XC-603 - Firefox intermittently hangs

I would like to know if anyone else uses the same type of Acer computer [Aspire-XC-603] and has the same problem with running Firefox. It periodically freezes. I was told it has something to do with the wrong graphic chip, but I am wondering if it could be related to my use of Firefox or installation of either Xubuntu or Firefox. I'm a "dumb user" so please don't be too technical!

Do you have Thunderbird installed? Thunderbird is the email client, and it usually pulls in Lightning, the calendar plugin. Lightning tends to use all available resources when it polls external calendars. My freezes stopped after purging Lightning.

Right hand of the horizontal menu in Thunderbird has an icon -- actually two: one for a calendar and one for tasks. Are they part of Thunderbird? I tried to search for Lightning under the Linux icon but it did not appear.

Lightning is the calendar part of thunderbird. To check for sure whether it's installed, check under addons. It can be removed either by command-line apt or through the pakaage manager. If you decide you need it back, it's easy to reinstall it either way. I don't know what you mean by 'searched for lightning under the Linux icon'. Perhaps that's something unique to Ubuntu.

I only have six add-ons for Thunderbird:Cloud... Blur... Smart Template4...Archive Reload... Deep Dark for Thunderbird and DKIM Verifier.. . looked under the list of Add-ons and saw Lightning but it was not added.

Sorry, what I meant by Linux icon is the little white acorn [?] at the top left-hand corner of the screen. When selected it displays the pull-down menu of what programmes are installed.

I think you mean the applications menu. That menu doesn't show everything installed, just applications that have a .desktop file. I'm not familiar with the addons you have, so I can't really comment. Your Firefox problem could easily be something else, perhaps a shortage of RAM. There are many, many possibilities.

I was told a long time ago that it was due to the PC having the wrong graphic chip. I don't have space for a graphic card so I was stuck with the problem. But then I thought perhaps it was tied to the way something was installed. My old laptop [32-bit] works well with Firefox although I am using chromium to view Knowledge Network. Maybe it's time for a new computer. I want one that comes with Linux.
I will check the package manager to see about Lightning because I do have a calendar on Thunderbird.
