I'm doing a (free) operating system

The 21 year old Finnish student Linus Benedict Torvalds announced his work on a free operating system in the comp.os.minix Usenet newsgroup.
Linus' own assessment, of where this would go in the future, could have hardly been further off:
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.
It all start with Linus working to provide a 'I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.'

Wow!

Great click-able timeline.

I though KNOPPIX when installed to a hard drive, couldn't be updated the same way a typical Debian install could. Maybe its been that long since I've used it.
