VM issue

I have installed virtualbox on a fully updated Slackware 15 system. I used the install script from the virtualbox website. Every time I try to boot up my newly created virtual OS it errors out. Apparently the kernel is not running and won't run. Also, I am unable to install the additions package. Something about root not owning /opt. I tried to installed by logging into root but no dice. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

When I attempt to run a virtualmachine within virtulbox I get this error:

The virtual machine 'Example' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0X80004005)
Component:
MachineWrap
Interface:
IMachine {300763af-5d6b-46e6-aa96-273eac15538a}

I thought I was missing the additions. So, I switched to root user in a terminal and attempted to install the additions and I received the following error:

Qt WARNING: QStandardPaths: runtime directory '/run/user/1000' is not owned by UID 0, but a directory permissions 077 owned by UID 1000 GID 100 // in the terminal
Name: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack

The installer failed with exit code 1: VBoxExtPackHelperApp: error: The owner is not root: '/opt'. // in the virtualbox application when attempting to install the additions pack.

I was thinking my issue was due to the missing additions but I am not sure.

/// Also, I can't locate the report button.

Update:

I decided to try changing opt ownership to root:root and attempted to install it. I received a reinstall prompt and a prompt indicating that it was already installed. So, that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Post Update: someone how the additions installed. It is really weird, because vboxmanage showed that no extensions were initially installed now it is installed despite showing a reinstall prompt and I know for a fact that it was installed. No, virtualbox is opening my VM fine. I will mark this as solved.

additions should be installed inside the VM, not on the host where vboxmanage is running.
report button can be found at the bottom left corner of the post.

I bet you would have more success building the queue for
https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...em/virtualbox/
And add those
https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...ualbox-addons/
https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...xtension-pack/

To know how to do this check
https://slackbuilds.org/howto/

If further questions, just ask

In particular, why does root not own /opt?

So, just to let everyone I was able to get the software to work. I uninstalled it first and then rebooted me system. I then logged in as root. I normally logged into my personal account and rant it as sudo or logged into a terminal as root. I ran the script from the vm website once I was fully logged into root. It then ran fine. I am assuming it is just the way that slackware is set up.

Without knowing more about what you did, it is difficult to say.

What I can say is that I've never had any issues using the script. Certainly nothing like the errors you saw.

Might be an "environmental" thing, as when you switch to root user using
Code:
su
Instead of
Code:
su -
