X Server Crash

Hi all,

What are the possible causes of X Server Crash? I made some modifications to the kernel and when i booted into the new one X server could not be started. I uncompressed a backup kernel and compiled it, even that didn't work. So i had to do a reinstall because i didn't know what else to do? What can be done in such situations? Thanks in advance.
