VI Editor on RedHat Enterprise Edition

I am using vi RedHat Enterprise. Somehow, the "set ruler" option is not displaying the ruler line, but it also does not give an error message when I make the setting. ":set" does not list "ruler" as one of the settings.

BTW, the program name is "vi" in the default installation. I tried to alias vim to vi, but get the same result.

On FC6 the above problem is not there. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

DKS

Make sure to install all of vim

Vim is the default editor on RHEL, but it isn't fully installed:

Make sure you have:
vim-minimal
vim-common

As well as:
vim-enhanced

In this way I do see ":set ruler" as one of the options.

Hope that helps.
