USB device not detected on EL6

I have an MCE USB IR device that is not detected when I plug it into my CentOS 6 system:

uname -a
Linux myhost 2.6.32-220.el6.i686 #1 SMP Tue Dec 6 16:15:40 GMT 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I know the device works since it can be detected by another machine running Fedora. The CentOS machine does detect other devices, such as a mouse, and an hd-pvr.

Any reason why CentOS would be doing this?

Is it a virtual machine or physical?
