Unlocatable package

hi all,
my first linux server so help me please

I have installed and got running
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 3 for x86)
along with the latest updates

My problems, two so far

1) FTP is missing! I had FTP checked during setup (I think) but it did not install. When Igo toAdd/Remove Apps, then down to servers, the OPTION to add FTP isn't even there. All of the other items expected under SERVERS are there, in fact I have net connectivity and apache web hosting running fine.

How do I add FTP services back to my Add/Remove Apps menu?

2) OK, so IfigureI'll just download ProFTP and install it. So I download it, untar it into a folder and go to install it and I get the message
configure:1800: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

which I understand, so I go back into Add/Remove Apps to install Development Tools and I get this msg;
Package Not Found
Unlocatable Package
krb5-libs
required by
krb5-workstation 1.2.7,24

Now this looses me. How doI findand download and install when I get such a msg?

Thanks very much all!

I am not sure what you miss. Look for public_ftp folder in your server directory. FTP server, if you have Apache already, is included.
If you simply need an ftp program, you probably already have lFTP or gFTP etc. Whenever you try to install something, take care about dependiencies. Simply install all what the program asks for.
You can try to locate program executables by running $slocate. Slocate is your best friend. To update the database of your programs run as root updatedb.

thx linuxfond, I understand the 'gist' of what you're saying if not the details of 'how to'

to be more specific, my first question is WHY is FTP missing from my "Add/Remove Apps' Server section? It is supposed to be there. Anyone know how I fix that?

my second question is; "How do I respond to the message 'Package Not Found - Unlocatable Package" Is there a procedure for me to find specific files that are missing, either on my drive, my cd's or the net?

I'm highly computer literate but very much a unix/linus newbie so I need some clear directions or steps.

thx again
