Unable to launch any application from shortcut on RHEL 7

Hello Everyone,

I'm totally new with Redhat and require your help to advice further. Right now I'm having intermittent issue with RHEL server whereby it does not open any application when I clicked on the shortcut.

This issue happened almost every week and sometimes it will be back working itself after sometime. For some cases, we will require a reboot then only it will work again.

It is really inconvenient for us to keep rebooting the server when this happened as this is an application server. We have two servers running on the same platform (RHEL 7) and both are having the same issue intermittently.

Anyone know if there's any fix for such issue? Thanks

Hi,

I am assuming from what you are saying that you do not have a support contract with Redhat? Otherwise you would be asking them. If you don't have a support contract you are not getting regular updates and therefore your system may not be up to date. Which may make trouble shooting difficult.

Best advice is to install one of the free clones of RHEL - Centos or Scientific Linux. These allow for regular updates and hence greater problem solving ability.

BTW, you mention "the shortcut". Is this the desktop shortcut or a shortcut from a menu?

Cheers

Hi,

I have checked with Redhat support earlier and they confirmed that our subscription is not covered for their support.

By the way, it's the shortcut from menu which are not working. If we browse the application from the file explorer, it's working without issue.

normally RHEL is installed WITHOUT a Desktop GUI
-- a server install

now in a Desktop install Gnome3 is default for RHEL7
Gnome 3 is JUNK ( gnome2 was GREAT )

so
what "shortcut" (and by shortcut you are referring to the "*.desktop " text files that are on the Desktop ) are you double clicking on

for example " firefox.desktop "

so i am guessing that after you login AS A NORMAL user ( NOT root) then when you double click on the firefox launcher ( the .desktop text file)

nothing happens

try this
open a terminal and type in
Code:
firefox
if firefox dose not start
post the error

as for the redhat support
if you bought the normal STANDARD 1 year support contract
-- SERVER - $799 / year
Desktop - $299 / year

then you have support

if however you bought the $49/year SELF support well then

it is up to you
