Unable to install RHEL 4.0 using SATA 2 hard disk

Dear all,

I purchased system with Asus mother board ( M2N8-VMX series) Nvidia MCP61P chipset, 320 GB SATA hard disk drive, AMD 3200 + processor.

First I installed the windows xp and i want dual booting. After installing the windows I try to install the RHEL 4.0. It displayed with an error message stating that "No hard disk found on your system". After this i searched alot in the google and found a command "linux all-generic-ide noapic nolapic" I used this command while in boot prompt. It did not asked me for any driver and the installation was successful. after it asked me for rebooting the system. Again i received an error message like:

Bkrootdev: label / not found
mount: erro 2 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount / initrd/dev failed:2
kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init!.

I searched a lot in the net. Kindly help me to install the same.

Thanks in advance.

A.K. Kannan

Which update version of RHEL4? I'd try the latest version (update 5) if at all possible...if you had to do that much of a workaround just to get the OS to see the onboard SATA, then chances are the version of RHEL4 you're trying to install with doesn't properly recognize the hardware.

Smile Asus M/b With Sis 671fx Chipset Unable To Detect Sata Hdd On Rhel 4

Good day!

Hope anyone can help my tech problem during my first installation of RHEL AS 4 update 2 on ASUS P5S-MX SE motherboard with SIS 671FX Chipset and 80GB Western Digital SATA HDD. During installation RHEL 4 can not found the SATA Drive. I tried to set the bios-SATA-on IDE mode to AHCI then to RAID after tried on each mode - on which on boot prompt I type the command "linux dd" (tried also "linux all-generic-ide noapic nolapic" boot command) then insert the floppy drive created from the CDROM Drivers with the M/B but still RHEL 4 can't detect the SATA drive after reading the inserted disk still there is an error "No found device drivers...."

Please help and hope you can give a step-by-step solution.

Your assistance is very much appreciated.

Thank you

Well friends ... I think the issue is resolved (RHEL 4 on SATA2).
Few days back I purchased AMD 4600+ (64 Bit Dual Core) With ASUS Main Board having 250GB SATA 2
HDD. When I tried to install RHEL 4, it was unable to locate the hard drive and gave an error.

Then I used command "linux all-generic-ide noapic nolapic"

and after this the installation went on very smoothly.

But after rebooting I got the following error.

mount: error 2 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount / initrd/dev failed:2
kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init!.

NOW HERE IS THE SOLUTION--
==================================================================
1> Use command "linux all-generic-ide noapic nolapic" for installation.

2> After completion of the installation reboot your system in "linux rescue" mode using linux bootable disk.

Use Command "linux all-generic-ide noapic nolapic rescue" to boot in rescue mode.

3> Then "edit grub.conf" file using command "vi /etc/grub.conf"

4> Then locate the line "kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-648.EL ro root=/dev/Volgroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quite"

Now we have to modify this line a bit which is as follows:-

"kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-648.EL ro root=/dev/Volgroup00/LogVol00 all-generic-ide noapic nolapic rhgb quite"

5> Reboot your system.

and thats it, it should work.

Please try this and let me know your feedback on contact.shrinivasjoshi@gmail.com
