I have successfully installed rh9 and am using gnome, I understand how to move around dir and most basic commands for bash, dealiing with installation and extracting tar's and rpm's.
My question would be then, after downloading my file
"gcc-3.3.3.tar.gz"
located in my home directory,
should I extract it within the home dir or should I move it /usr/local/src
and run tar xvf gcc-3.3.3.gz and is this "/usr/local/src" dir be the place all download files should be extracted from and complied or installed.
I did a basic install and did not want to include the extra software on the CD to install for me only so that I can learn to install what I will use only, i would think that a complier would automatically be installed even without selecting it to be installed,
I somewhat understand ./configure
make & make install commands, but the only thing is they haven't worked for me yet, I did take the time to read the man pages and I have many E-books regarding Linux and i read the install.html doc for gcc (objdir vs subjdir)
, very confusing so I'm not looking for a free handout I am willing to do my homework, i'm really surprised I got this far,
If anyone can help please do so.
