Question System won't log into X

I have been running RH9 with X Windows for all of last week. This morning however, I can't go into X. After typing in startx, it just displays the Redhat logo screen and won't continue from there. To get out I have to press the reset button on the PC and do a cold boot. What could have happened and how can I fix this.

Regards
FK

Before you press the button, try ctrl-alt-backspace to get you out of X.

Look at;
* your screen for errors, before and after
* ~/.xsessions-error (notice the .)
* /var/log/XFree.log
* try startx >> x.log

// In RH9, that will be XFree(maybe something).log, haven't use RH9 in years and can't remember, but you'll see it.

A user is authentified by a key, saved in the file ~/.Xauthority . I think this file is created for each session, but it may be locked after a crash (because your improper shutdown ). Once you deleted the file, a proper authorisation is possible again and you can start X

See whether the xfs service is on/off,if it is off then do
service xfs start.
and run the command "system-config-display"

It should work.

sharad.
