I have been running RH9 with X Windows for all of last week. This morning however, I can't go into X. After typing in startx, it just displays the Redhat logo screen and won't continue from there. To get out I have to press the reset button on the PC and do a cold boot. What could have happened and how can I fix this.
A user is authentified by a key, saved in the file ~/.Xauthority . I think this file is created for each session, but it may be locked after a crash (because your improper shutdown ). Once you deleted the file, a proper authorisation is possible again and you can start X
