startx: no screens found error upon installing NVIDIA VGA card on RH 7.2


My Red Hat 7.2 machine was working perfectly with RIVA TNT2 card. Then I had to try NVIDIA GeFORCE FX 5200 card, so I plugged it into the same PCI slot as RIVA, installed the drivers (whose installation was successful) and did startx. Startx gives me the Fatal Error" No Screens Found and the GUI doesn't come up.

1. you might need to update your pci database (generally its PCI utilities) so as to allow your system recognize the device. Looks unnecessary if the driver got installed (did you use the *.run package, aka self-installer).
2. you might need to run xconfig (or xorgconfig - don't remember) and play with the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Be careful and don't overwrite it.

P.S.: did you use a PCI type of nVidia Riva TNT2? Wow, never seen (or heard of) it.

Hi
Thanks for your suggestions. Below is my reply:
1. Yes i used *.run and the drivers got installed successfully.
2. there is no xorg.conf file. The command is xf86config and the output file is XF86Config which I have copied below.
3. Yes earlier I was using PCI type Riva TNT2.

Anyother suggestions??

I don't know if it is actually incompatible with Redhat 7.2 or not. Redhat 7.2 is extremely old now, and unless you have a very good reason not to, I suggest that you try Fedora Core 5. The hardware support of FC5 is much better, so your card will be likely to work.

Thanks for the suggestion but the problem is that I use a software incorporated with Red Hat 7.2 and had to try a new VGA card to work along. My software cannot work with anyother Linux versions.

Anyways, I'll try another VGA now.

I have a three year old box and the VGA is:
nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev a2)
it worked on my RH8 (Psyche).
