runlevel 3 wont login

I cannot login to the local machine (console) in runlevel 3 with any user or root accounts, the prompt just displays login incorrect and clears the screen but I can login to any user or root through SSH (putty) just fine and also the gui with run level 5. When trying with invalid credentials, it doesn't clear the screen. Any ideas???

That is odd. Are you typing the username and password with proper case as in upper and lower case letters. Other than that no other thoughts at the moment.

The username/password is in the correct case and the system behaves different when it get a correct password (clears screen and puts up the login prompt) and invalid (it displays login incorrect without clearing screen)

What are your logs saying about the failed attempts?

The last time we had this issue was due to a change to our /etc/pam.d/login file - edited for installation of Oracle. Someone put a full path instead of only the module name.

Have you recently modified this file (/etc/pam.d/login)?
