Question Remote printing problem

Hello, all.

For various reasons, I'm trying to do remote printing with a RH 7.2 box as the client
and a RH 4.2 box as the print server. I've got my /etc/printcap entry set up, as well
as the directory in /var/spool/lpd. I don't get any error messages when I try to print
using lpr, but nothing prints. The status file confirms that the control and data files
are being sent to "printer1@pcterm1" which is the correct name for the printer & remote server.
Unfortunately there's no similar file in 4.2, but the queue is clear.

Is there anything I need to set up on the 4.2 box to allow it to receive print jobs like this
or is that kind of communication not possible between 7.2 and 4.2? Anything will help.

You need to get CUPS running on your RH7.2 box, and use the web configuration interface. You can set up the remote printer quite easily this way.

Also, why are you running such an outdated version of Linux (RH7.2). If you were to upgrade to a modern, supported version of Linux, such as Fedora, Ubuntu or Debian, all you would need to do would be to turn on Browsing on the server and then the printer will be automatically detected.
