Recommendation for swap file size

Hello --

We are setting up a system that is running the Red Hat Enterprise 7.2 release. The server has 256 gigabytes of RAM installed. What would be the recommended size of the swap file during the operating system installation?

Yo do not create swap files during installation, you can create them later should you need more swap space.

You set up a test system and use your metrics to determine what kind of swap and how much.

In modern linux swap isn't as terrible as it once was. You can set how most programs use swap and you can create even swap raid to speed up it's use. There are many options for swap so you can't really go by any rule of thumb.

If you want to hibernate then you may need more than ram plus some overhead. It will have to be in /swap not in swap file.
