Hi All,

I'm a newbie to RedHat and it's my first post (I doubt it'll be the last!) so apologies in advance for any stupid questions or lack of correct information.

I've just installed RedHat 5 Server (v5.3 and x86_64) onto a VMWare virtual server.

During the install I choose not to connect to the Red Hat Network immediately, but leave it for later. The install completed successfully.

When I try to receive updates from the RHN using the Software Update GUI (signed on as root) it fails to connect and I receive the error message

"We could not contact Red Hat Network (xmlrpc.rhn.redhat.com)"

I'm connecting via a proxy using authentication.

I can connect to the above address using Firefox, but not using the Software Update.

I've spoken to our Network guys about the problem... they feel the problem is Me/RedHat, whilst I believe the problem could be the Proxy and/or our Network.

Can help with my investigation and hopefully resolve the issue?

You need to run (as root) the rhn_register program before you can get updats. You'll need your 'subscription/serial number'.
The prog will ask you if you use a proxy & user/passwd etc (iirc).
Or just search the RH KB or phone them.
