ntfs will not mount on RHEL5

hello,

after a fresh install of RHEL5.3 i installed ntfs-3g by compiling from source but still got the error:
Code:
"The volume uses ntfs file system which is not supported by your system."
so i did a "make uninstall" and saw the files removed.

i then installed yum-protection (to avoid conflicts), rpmforge repo, fuse & fuse-ntfs-3g.

i get the same error in the GUI and if i manually try to mount:
Code:
[root@megaman ~]# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /mnt/tmp
FATAL: Module fuse not found.
ntfs-3g-mount: fuse device is missing, try 'modprobe fuse' as root
[root@megaman ~]# modprobe fuse
FATAL: Module fuse not found.
[root@megaman ~]# yum list installed | grep fuse
fuse.x86_64 2.7.4-1.el5.rf installed
fuse-ntfs-3g.x86_64 2009.4.4-1.el5.rf installed
this is weird i've never had an issue mounting ntfs! i've added removed the fuse packages too.

what can i try next?

thanks,
disorderly

A guy at work had this problem and he just followed the direction here. Not sure if your previous attempts to install will cause you any grief (sorry, I'm a Debian guy and don't know RH inner workings).

thanks for your reply pljvaldez,

i did some more googling and hit this post at LQ of all places.

turns out when you install the fuse package it DOES NOT install a necessary package called the kernel module. you also need to install "dkms-fuse". the kernel module for fuse. it seems it SHOULD be a dependency

oh well problem solved!
