Ah, I got it. I changed the permissions on /SharedDocs for all to have write access, then I changed the permissions on /SharedDocs/Frank for all to write. I realized root was the owner of the folders.

Is there a way that when root creates a folder that all users can automatically have full access?

Glad you got it all working

About changing folder permissions, Samba has many folder mask possibilities. You don't want to change the way root creates folders, although it could be done like this.

mkdir -m 777 /somefolder

you could create an alias, but don't do it. You might forget about it.

Ok, I played with Samba some...

First I changed the permissions on /SharedDocs and /SharedDocs/Frank back to what they were when they were created: owner is root and only root has write permissions.

Then in /etc/samba/smb.conf I created the entry

[Frank]
path = /SharedDocs/Frank
valid users = frank
browseable = yes
writeable = yes

From my XP machine, I can see the Frank folder and the files in it and I can open the files. But I cannot write any other files into the folder. Is there something else I can set in Samba, or do I actually have to change the folder permissions as I had done?

Off topic: How does the affero thingy work? I pressed the button but wasn't sure what to do when I got to the next screen...

I would make a group for the users that will have access to folders, then add the users to the new group and set group permissions on the folder

ls -l /var/spool/samba
total 20176
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 19 2002 bin
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Dec 19 2002 lib
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 2 02:04 netlogon
drwxrwxr-- 4 root users 4096 Dec 19 2002 printers
drwxrwx--- 4 root users 4096 Dec 19 2002 profiles
drwxrwx--- 3 root users 4096 Sep 8 01:40 public

ls -l samba/public
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 2 david david 4096 Sep 8 01:40 david

the david folder was created by david, the mask is as such that folders are created with read permissions for all in public.

ls -l samba/profiles
total 8
drwxrwx--- 3 root users 4096 Dec 19 2002 98
drwxrwx--- 5 root users 4096 May 18 04:07 nt

ls -l samba/profiles/98
total 4
drwx------ 12 david david 4096 Oct 7 03:10 david

likewise the profiles folders are created private

Affero will let you comment on the help you received, or leave a donation. It's been a long time since I registered there, but I think you just use your email address. I think you can use it without registering, not sure.

Basically if you click someones button you are brought to their account so what you do will apply to that person.
