kernel panic upgrading to 2.6.1

I have installed linux 9.0 on my Dell Latitude d800. Now I am in th eprocess of ipgrading the kernel to 2.6.1. The kernel was compiled, and installed. I am getting the following errors at boot time:

ounting /Proc filesystem
Creating block devices
Creating root device
mounting root filesystem
mount: error 19 mounting ext3
pivotroot: pivot_root(/Sysroot,/Sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
umount /initrd/proc failed: 2
freeing unused kernel memory: 216k freed
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

After going throught the messages I changed my grub.confas

root=/dev/hda5

but still getting the same error.

Please help

linux 9.0 :-) -----------------> Windows XP,
Redhat 9.0 i guess :-)

cat /etc/fstab
recompile the kernel(pseudo file systems + file systems you use and didn't include)

make sure you have the newer mkinitrd for kernel 2.6. you can find it here: http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6/RPMS.kernel/

you also want to install the modutils. I didn't install the other stuff there but whatever you do don't install the lvm and probably the device-mapper stuff unless you know what you are doing
