The two thoughts I have are:
1) Did you correctly enter the info about your default gateway? If you did, your routing table (run the command
route -n) will have an entry similar to the following:

0.0.0.0 192.168.1.123 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0
where, in this case, the default gateway is available via eth0 at 192.168.1.123
2) Are you
sure your DNS is configured properly? If item (1) was correct, try the following 3 commands:

ping localhost
ping 64.179.4.146
ping www.linuxquestions.org
If the first two work, but the third does not, you have DNS problems.
