Installing Python 2.2.3-26 in RH 8

I'm trying to install from an rpm. Didn't want to go from the RH CD because I want to use the new version of PyQt, which needs a newer version of Python. I get dependency messages:
libcrupto.so.4
libpthread.so.p
libssl.so.4
I copied all of these from another machine that has RH9 and made sure the symbolic links were pointing correctly. These are all in /usr/lib. Where is Python looking for them?
In addition the following are on the end of the list of dependencies:
python = 2.2.1
python = 2.2.3-1
Do these represent symbolic links? If so, in which directory should they be?
