NFS is Network File System. If you're not doing a networked file system of any kind, then you don't need to run it.

Init 3 is usually a multiusre system with no gui.
init 2 ( looking at inittab ) multiuser without NFS.

Yeah, it mention something about no network, but if you look in your /etc/rc2.d and /etc/rc3.d all you should see is a missing S14nfslock or some such between the two.

Yeah, as far as I can tell, it's just NFS...if you don't run NFS, then init 2 will work for you.

OK Next question

OK now i have noticed that on init 3 and/or 2 some services like httpd dont seem to be running.

i.e. When i am in init 3 and i want to drop to the gui i do a telinit 5 command and it looks like linux is loading those services, including httpd!!

Is httpd running in init 3

You need to look in your /etc/rc.#

init 2 is /etc/rc2.d, 3 is /etc/rc3.d, and 5 is /etc/rc5.d

LOOK in those directories. You'll see what gets started.

Altenatively, you could use

$> checkconfig --list

to see all the services at all run levels.

You should be running in 3 NOT 2. And just disable the services you do not want running.

Like bcarl314 posted, use the chkconfig utility to disable services. IE:

[root@ohssa01 root]# chkconfig --list
nfs 0ff 1ff 2ff 3ff 4ff 5ff 6ff

to turn a service on/off use:
#chkconfig [--level <levels>] <name> <on|off|reset>)

#chkconfig --level 23456 nfs off

Since Technoslave wont take the time to explain, I will.

If you are a newbie to RedHat Linux and you do not understand the inits, then the "chkconfig" utility is a very nice tool that controls the system services. It allows you to view all the services that will start on your system and what runlevel they will start in.

If you are running a networked workstation or server then your default runlevel should be 3, then turn off the servies you do not wish to run.
