In the GUI Screen (F7) there is a desktop option which no longer works

I was attempting to add samba server using rpm. Once I added the samba software and returned to the Desktop screen, the computer/other icons no longer appeared. When I select Desktop under places, I get an error about ///root/Desktop not found. I did not get any errors while adding the rpm.

Hi. Welcom to LQ forums.

Please provide following details:

OS Version, CentOS 5.4, RHEL 5.3, etc.

Please provide the name of the rpm and from where you downloaded it, or how you installed it (with yum from special repository?).
