Hi guys

I can't play any mp3's with xmms or any other player because mp3 support is taken out of redhat. I've tried a million different ways of getting that support back, but nothing has worked so far.

I've got XMMS 1.2.10 which came on the cd, and when I go to Options->Preferences and look at plugins it has a "MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Placeholder Plugin". This seems to have only one purpose; a popup saying mp3 support is taken out of redhat...

I've installed mpg123-0.59r-gpl and I read somewhere that the mpg123.so file was needed, so I copied that to /usr/lib/xmms/Input (where the other .so plugins files were) However that didn't really do anything. How can I make xmms use mpg123?

First test and see if mpg123 works:

mpg123 /var/foo/some_mp3_file.mp3

if you get music then great. Otherwise troubleshoot that installation.

Next, you have to disable the placeholder plugin in XMMS. And then try to play mp3s.
