how to find how many group or user I have?


hi,
can any one tell me the comand to show how many groups I have , and what's the " users" group? is it a default group of linux? I cat /etc/passwd find user infor, but not groups.

Try using; cat /etc/groups

Hi Jimmy,

when u create a user in linux using the useradd <username> command, a user with name <username> is created and is by default part of the <username> group. U can view this in /etc/passwd file. To view the group name cat /etc/groups.

To change the users default GROUP which is the same as the username use,

usermod -G <newgroupname> <username>
