Question How to change order services are started in?

Running RH9. How can I change the order in which services start. Specifically, I want cups to start before SMB.

The order in which services start is determined by names of links to them in /etc/rc5.d (or whatever your runlevel is). All the links start with SXX, like S55cups, S20smbd, etc. To make cups start before smbd, you sould rename S55cups to S19cups, for example. (Just be careful not to start cups before a service it depends on).

Thanks for the help Dialore! I am a bit confused - where you say "rename S55cups to S19smbd" should it be "S19cups"?

Also, is there a way to determine what services cups depends on?

Yes, you are definitely right - rename to S19cups, of course. I'm not sure that there is a universal way do determine the dependencies, I suggest you just try and see what happens. Or you can rename SXXsmbd to S98smbd, as I do not think that anything depends on Samba.

I'll give that a try. Sounds like it will work just fine. Thanks again for the help!
