have a startup application run as a different user

is there a way to have applications starting at boot ran as a different user instead of root?

i realized if you put scripts in rcX.d folders, they are run as root. so i was hoping if i can change that in some way or another? thank you in advance

Yes you can. I have the following in one of my startup scripts to start Tomcat as the jakarta user:
Code:
/bin/su - jakarta -c /usr/local/bin/start-tomcat.sh
