it may be a hardware problem, i had RedHat 9 on my old MSI 5182 ALi mobo with an AMD K6-2 475mhz with a _tiny_ little heatsink and a very weedy fan.
i used to get seg faults all the time, whenever i did anything CPU-intensive.
after upgrading my mobo to a Giga-Byte GA7ZXE with a Duron 950 (yes, i am that behind the times
) my problems disappeared, no more lockups, no more seg faults, and i could recompile my kernel without having to reboot and scan my hard drives 20 times during the operation.
and yes, with the old mobo/cpu windoze had the same problems, thing is with my new mobo/cpu its still exactly the same, crashes every 10 mins
EDIT: should this not be in the linux-redhat/linux-software forum, or if this is the case, maybe linux-hardware
