gnome startup programs

Where is the right place to put a command that will start a program upon logging in on a per-user basis?

Is there a text file I can put these in, or do I have to go through the Preference/Sessions gui?

I see ~/.xinitrc is only sourced when doing startx from a command line.

You could use ~/.bash_profile but it is editable by the user if that poses a problem.
