file renamed from mpg to mpeg on download

I've put an mpg file in a directory with directory listing enabled on our site but when you click it the "page can not be displayed" happens and if you right click it in IE and choose save as, the file name is *.mpeg.

The question is, how can I make it where clicking the file opens the "open, save, or cancel" options (assuming the user hasn't selected don't ask for this file type) and if the user right clicks, save as, the name doesn't change??

Thanks for help,
Eric K.

Difficult

to say what in particular is causing your difficulty with this without more specific information. As a matter of reference, .mpeg refers to the first MPEG standard (ie Mpeg 1 as opposed to 1 or 2 or 4), so that may in fact be correct depending on what standard you used to encode your video (telling us what package/hardware you used to do this may help if you do not know/ cannot find out)

The same type of thing would apply to as to why your page isnīt being fetched as expected when you click on your video link. I noticed looking at your site that you seem to be using a PHP server of some sort. I do know that PHP is a sort of server side language that has the ability to DENY pages/content, etc to virtually any client based on who they are (where they are, etc). Being someone with very little experience in server side apps, I would say that it may be helpful if you would disclose to us what you are using to make your pages (although doing this in some cases could pose a certain security risk to you. It seems by the very nature of your question that you are not in fact coding your own pages from scratch, and because of how PHP works, it can be difficult from OUR side of things to see the exact nature of any given problem)

thanks but as I said, an mpg file, that says mpg both when you hover over the link and when I do a dir changes upon being downloaded to mpeg. it was encoded and saved as mpg. it is an mpg on the server.
Weird huh?

Though it's not my site I'm talking about, the page referenced is an apache produced directory listing page, plain html and would not be affected by mods would it?
