Extract cpio.gz file

Hi

I was trying to extract a file by using this command

cpio -idmvz <file.cpio.gz> but system hangs. Nothing gets extracted.

Can anybody tell me is there any other ways to extract it.

'cd /safe/to/unpack/in/directory && cat file.cpio.gz | cpio --your-args'.
