Enabling SNMP on Red Hat Enterprise

Hi all,

I'm having some issues setting up SNMP monitoring on Red Hat Enterprise.

The version of Red Hat is Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.1 (Tikanga) 2.6.18-53.1.14.e15

I appear to have an snmp.conf file in our etc directory, and I have appropriately edited that, to include the correct community name and the trap destination, but am getting no reply when I try and get data from it.

I'm using Solarwinds IP Monitor software in order to get the data off SNMP.

Can we keep any advice simple please, very basic level of knowledge on the Linux OS.

Thanks in advance for any help,

for a RHEL5 server, the default location for the snmp.conf file is /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf. Is that the file you edited?
At it's most basic, if you have /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and it only has 1 line:
Code:
rocommunity snmp 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
and then you restart the snmpd service with:
Code:
service snmpd restart
you should have snmp working. You can test this with the command (on the same machine) with:
Code:
snmpwalk -v 1 -c snmp localhost
Note: by default iptables will block this? Do you have iptables (firewall) activated? You can temporarily turn off with:
Code:
service iptables stop
